Welthungerhilfe it is one of Germany's biggest non-governmental relief organizations. Non-profit making, politically independent and non-denominational, the organization is run by a Supervisory Board of honorary members under the patronage of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its work is funded by private donations and public grants. Welthungerhilfe is working since the 1980’s continuously in Afghanistan and opened the first offices in 1992. Since this time Welthungerhilfe has implemented some 165 projects in Afghanistan. Main fields of Welthungerhilfe intervention in Afghanistan are emergency relief, food and nutrition security, rural and regional development and water and sanitation.

Objectives, Duties, Areas of Responsibility

1. Objectives of the position

The aim of the position is to act as focal person for both internal and external communication concerning the work of Welthungerhilfe in the country of assignment.

2. Duties and area of responsibility

2.1. Duties with own area of responsibility

• Reviewing all existing brochures and leaflets prepared by Welthungerhilfe in the country
• Develop and maintain good links with the media; organize media events
• In consultation with the systems developer manage the landing page of Welthungerhilfe country program; ensure regular posting of information; ensure page is up to date, accurate and compelling
• Write and produce high quality communication materials, and effectively communicate these across key audiences; while ensuring that they conform to Welthungerhilfe standards and promote the image and objectives
• Be the focal person for both internal and external communication
• Liaise with the marketing and communications departments at the head office in Bonn, Germany on the required information for public relations
• Get familiar with the visibility strategy of Welthungerhilfe as well as donor needs
• Regularly obtain briefing from the Programmes Department about the status of the projects and requirements of donors in terms of visibility
• Make regular field visits to ensure that visibility strategy is being complied with
• Produce short videos and audios for internet publishing
• Produce good quality pictures for publishing purposes
• Conduct interviews with beneficiaries and write down success stories that can be used in publication materials
• Preparation of Power Point Presentations and handouts of the current work done by Welthungerhilfe that can also be used in meetings with donors and other stakeholders
• Produce, together with the Programme Department communication strategy document
• Assist field teams by giving ideas on useful visual publication materials for beneficiaries.
• If necessary, train field officers on how to use cameras & GPS
• Adhere to the Welthungerhilfe principles & policies as laid down in its constitution and maintain a spirit of cooperation with Welthungerhilfe staff, other NGOs, project partners, local authorities, etc.

2.2 Duties without own area of responsibility

• Fulfillment of any other tasks which are assigned by the management and correspond in general with the character of this position

2.3 Specific Activities and duties of the position

To be filled in or described individually by the Country Director or immediate superior

• Develop and implement a tailored communications plan in collaboration with the country team and the global WHH team.
• Produce high-quality communication materials such as weekly / biweekly reports for HQ, press releases, blog posts, fact sheets, social media content, newsletters, policy papers, sector strategies, presentations as well as visibility and engagement materials for donors and other stakeholders.
• Manage WHH’s digital presence in Afghanistan, including social media.
• Translate technical findings into accessible content for diverse audiences.
• Cultivate relationships with Afghanistan and regional media outlets to promote WHH’s mission and programs.
• Identify and leverage opportunities for positive local and regional media coverage and public visibility.
• Assist in designing and facilitating stakeholder events and public briefings.
• Support Country Director and other and senior staff with media engagement, briefing notes, talking points, and public presentation.
• Strengthening advocacy capacity, including the development of policy messaging, talking points, and stakeholder engagement tools.
• Provide guidance, training, and mentoring to WHH staff and partners on communications, storytelling, WHH branding, and donor visibility requirements.
• Coordinate with the Head of Business Development, Head of Programme and other program staff for integrated communications.
• Foster capacity- and community-strengthening activities with partners, respecting their unique voices while aligning with WHH standards. Facilitate communication within WHH-led consortia and networks, ensuring alignment and shared learning.
• Support partnerships and networks to increase WHH’s visibility, reputation, and influence at local, national, and international levels.
• Act as a communication focal point for internal initiatives, supporting cross-team learning and synergy with WHH’s global communications professionals.
• Contribute to international fundraising campaigns and global positioning efforts.
• Monitor and report on communications deliverables, progress, and outcomes to the Business Development and Senior Management team.
• Contribute to donor reporting, ensuring communication components meet both donor and WHH visibility and branding guidelines.
• Support and facilitate (and accompany if applicable) the visit of journalists.
• Manage preparations of events, agenda, briefing notes for high level visits.

Bachelor’s degree (BSc/BBA) in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations, Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field.

• 3–5 years of relevant professional experience in communications, public relations, media relations, advocacy, or marketing, preferably with an international or national NGO.

• Strong knowledge of communication strategies, media engagement, content development, digital communications, social media management, and branding principles.

• Proven experience in producing high-quality communication materials, including reports, press releases, success stories, newsletters, presentations, and visibility products.

• Clear conceptual understanding and practical experience in analyzing the local socio-cultural context, humanitarian and development issues, and stakeholder dynamics in Afghanistan.

• Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate technical information into clear and engaging content for diverse audiences.

• Ability to facilitate meetings, workshops, media events, and stakeholder gatherings to achieve communication and advocacy objectives.

• Experience in photography, videography, and the development of visual communication materials is an asset.

• Strong interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with media, donors, partners, and other stakeholders.
