Position Summary
The Health and Nutrition Supervisor is responsible for the overall technical and operational supervision of health and nutrition activities implemented by the organization.
The position will provide technical guidance and day-to-day supervision to health and nutrition staff, monitor the quality of services, support community-based activities, ensure compliance with organizational and relevant health and nutrition standards, and contribute to accurate reporting and program improvement.
The Health and Nutrition Supervisor will work closely with health facilities, community health workers, nutrition staff, PSS staff, community leaders, local authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure that beneficiaries receive safe, accessible, equitable, and quality health and nutrition services.
Key Responsibilities
1. Program Planning and Implementation
- Support planning, implementation, and monitoring of health and nutrition activities in accordance with approved project plans.
- Develop and maintain activity work plans and implementation schedules.
- Ensure health and nutrition activities are implemented according to organizational policies, technical guidelines, and donor requirements.
- Coordinate with program teams to ensure activities are delivered on time and according to agreed targets.
- Identify implementation challenges and propose practical solutions to the Program Manager.
- Support integration of health, nutrition, PSS, hygiene promotion, and community-based activities where appropriate.
2. Supervision of Health and Nutrition Staff
- Provide day-to-day technical and administrative supervision to health and nutrition team members.
- Conduct regular field visits to monitor staff performance and service quality.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job technical support to staff.
- Ensure staff understand their roles, responsibilities, and reporting requirements.
- Monitor staff attendance, work plans, performance, and workload.
- Identify training and capacity-building needs and communicate them to management.
- Conduct regular team meetings and provide constructive feedback.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and respectful communication.
3. Health Services
- Supervise implementation of primary health activities.
- Monitor health education, health promotion, disease prevention, and referral activities.
- Ensure beneficiaries receive appropriate information about available health services.
- Monitor referral mechanisms between community services and health facilities.
- Monitor availability and appropriate use of essential health supplies and materials.
- Identify gaps in health service delivery and report them to management.
4. Nutrition Services
- Supervise nutrition screening, awareness, referral, and community-based nutrition activities.
- Monitor identification and referral of children and pregnant and lactating women who may be at risk of malnutrition.
- Support implementation of community-based nutrition interventions in accordance with approved guidelines.
- Ensure nutrition activities are properly documented and reported.
- Monitor nutrition indicators and identify trends or gaps requiring management attention.
- Coordinate with health facilities and relevant stakeholders regarding nutrition referrals and follow-up.
- Promote appropriate infant and young child feeding practices through community awareness activities where applicable.
6. Monitoring, Quality Assurance, and Data Management
- Conduct regular monitoring visits to health and nutrition activity sites.
- Review service quality and ensure activities meet established technical standards.
- Check the completeness and accuracy of program data and registers.
- Verify reported data against source documents where required.
- Track program indicators, targets, achievements, and gaps.
- Identify trends, challenges, and areas requiring corrective action.
- Ensure program documentation is complete, accurate, confidential, and securely maintained.
- Support data collection, analysis, and interpretation for program decision-making.
7. Reporting
- Prepare and submit regular health and nutrition activity reports to the supervisor.
- Consolidate reports from field staff and outreach teams.
- Ensure reports accurately reflect activities, achievements, challenges, referrals, and recommendations.
- Document lessons learned, success stories, challenges, and corrective actions.
- Ensure reports are submitted within established deadlines.
8. Coordination
- Coordinate regularly with the Program Manager, project team, health and nutrition staff, logistics, finance, and administration departments.
- Maintain effective coordination with health facilities and relevant government health authorities.
- Participate in health and nutrition coordination meetings when assigned.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with community representatives and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate referrals with appropriate health, nutrition, protection, and specialized service providers.
9. Supplies, Medicines, and Equipment
- Monitor the availability and appropriate use of health and nutrition supplies and equipment.
- Coordinate with logistics and procurement teams regarding program supply needs.
- Monitor consumption and identify potential shortages or stock issues.
- Ensure program materials and equipment are properly stored, used, and maintained.
- Report damaged, lost, expired, or insufficient supplies through established procedures.
- Support stock verification and inventory processes as required.
