Afghan Health and Development Services (AHDS) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental, and non-political organization founded by Afghans on April 7th, 1990.  AHDS is an active member of the Afghan NGOs Coordination Bureau (ANCB), the Agency Coordinating Body for Afghan Relief (ACBAR), and the Alliance of Health Organizations (AHO). AHDS is one of the first signatories of the Codes of Conduct for NGOs engaged in humanitarian action, reconstruction, and development in Afghanistan.

The main office: AHDS is registered as a national NGO with the Ministry of Economy – Afghanistan. The registration number (5) was renewed on 25 Aug 2005 (old number 219 on 18 Nov 1999). Its TIN is 100 005 5 010.

Job Summary

  • Maternal Care: Provide continuous care to pregnant women, including regular antenatal checkups, safe delivery services, and postnatal follow-up care .
  • Delivery & Emergency Management: Conduct normal deliveries, monitor labor using partographs, and identify complications such as postpartum hemorrhage or pre-eclampsia . Stabilize and refer complex cases to higher-level facilities .
  • Newborn Care: Provide essential newborn care, including neonatal resuscitation if required, and promote exclusive breastfeeding and proper weaning practices at 6 months .
  • Family Planning & Counseling: Provide family planning services, psychosocial counseling, and health education to women of reproductive age .
  • Nutrition & Health Promotion: Screen pregnant and lactating women for malnutrition, provide iron-folic acid supplementation, and conduct awareness sessions on maternal nutrition and infant feeding . Participate in growth monitoring of children under five .
  • Vaccination & Prevention: Maintain the cold chain and support immunization programs (EPI and TT vaccination) .
  • Referral & Coordination: Strengthen referral systems and coordinate with community health workers and other health facility staff .
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate patient records, register all pregnant mothers, and prepare monthly reports according to health information system guidelines .

Job Requirements

  • Education: Diploma in Midwifery (LM) or Lady Health Visitor (LHV) from a recognized institution .
  • Registration: Valid registration with the relevant health professional council .
  • Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in a midwifery or maternal health role .
  • Skills: Competent in clinical midwifery skills, emergency obstetric care, and basic newborn care.
  • Languages: Fluency in English and local languages (e.g., Pashto, Dari) .
  • Other: Ability to work in a resource-limited setting, maintain patient confidentiality, and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
