 HealthNet TPO in Afghanistan aims to improve the health status of the people in Afghanistan by supporting the local communities and stakeholder in the development of a sustainable health care system.  HealthNet TPO is working in Afghanistan since 1994, implementing integrated health projects managed mainly by national staff and supported technically by expatriate staff from the headquarter office. HealthNet TPO Afghanistan is providing Primary and secondary Health Care, Mental Health and psychosocial services, and supporting Mother & Child Health Care in terms of providing training for Community Midwifes and to conduct operation research. Health Net TPO is currently implementing projects in 22 provinces and the major programs are Health Emergency Response (B/EPHS) projects in three provinces, nutrition, Mental Health, Psychosocial program, Malaria and TB Control program, through a community system strengthening approach.

Job Description:

  • To provide a high standard of work as set by the service as regards the quality of ultrasound examinations
  • To ensure that the ultrasound examination of patients is carried out as quickly as possible, consistent with keeping to the standard required and that the patients are sent home with the least possible delay
  • To assist the other Sonographers in the ultrasound service in maintaining service provision
  • To be responsible at all times for the patients’ welfare and comfort
  • To respond to and investigate any reports of malfunction of the Ultrasound apparatus, accessories, office equipment or computer system. To report any malfunction to the Operations/Service Manager and report any delay in the repair
  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of work including clinical practice, and for the work and clinical practice of line-managed staff.
  • To ensure a high standard of clinical care within own professional practice, and support other staff within the specialty to do likewise.
  • To undertake the highly specialised comprehensive investigations of patients, including those with the most complex presentation, using advanced investigative and analytical skills and using standardised protocols where possible.
  • To formulate individualised investigations, when necessary, based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills and utilising a wide range of highly specialised sonographic skills to enable the production of effective good quality diagnostic imaging.
  • To be responsible for ensuring the effective selection and use of the appropriate diagnostic investigations available by information gained from collaboration with other colleagues within the specialty both locally and nationally.
  • To implement new techniques based on evidence.
  • To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation in line with legal and service requirements, and communicate diagnostic results to the appropriate disciplines in the form of reports and letters and ensure the other staff within the section do so.
  • To provide highly specialist advice to colleagues working within other clinical areas, and to other health care professionals.
  • To assist and ensure that staff adhere to safe and effective moving and handling of patients.
  • To autonomously compose and verify a written report which records the sonographic observations made during the examination, their significance and any limitations of the study.
  • To be personally responsible for the accuracy of the report and ensure that the report is communicated to the appropriate personnel.
  • To be aware of current literature regarding the potential biological hazards of diagnostic ultrasound and the need to minimise doses at all times.
  • To be aware of conditions where current recommendations contra-indicate the use of certain types of ultrasound equipment/modes.
  • To select equipment appropriate for the examinations and be aware of its limitations within that clinical context.
  • To ensure that all probes are appropriately cleaned and prepared with especial reference to intra-cavity probes, following manufacturers guidelines and local Infection Control procedure
  • To ensure that any hard copy image taken is an accurate record of displayed information relevant to the patient being examined on the date when the examination took place
  • To ensure a high standard of written and verbal communication with patients and referring clinicians.
  • To take part in the vetting of ultrasound requests, establishing whether the clinical details provided are sufficient to perform the examination requested and whether the correct examination has been requested.
  • To recognize the urgency of requests and priorities accordingly
  • To discuss incomplete or inappropriate requests with the Ultrasound Clinical Lead and/or referring clinicians as soon as possible so that the patient receives prompt and correct management.
  • To take part in personal, departmental and wider audit programmers where appropriate, to evaluate clinical practice and service to patients.
  • To actively participate in activities designed to improve the service to clients, patients and clinician.
  • To promote patients’ rights and ensure confidentiality of patient information

Job Requirements:

  • Graduated from a recognized Medical Faculty, passed Exit Exam and (Ultrasond Diploma )
  • At least 1 year’ experience in relevant field. 
  • Fluent in Dari, Pashto and working knowledge of English Language.
  • Good oral/written communication skills of English, Pashto and Dari.
  • Honest and trustworthy
