Job Description:

Job Summary:

The Agronomist is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring agricultural and livestock activities to improve productivity, food security, and livelihoods of target beneficiaries. He provides technical support to farmers and pastoralists, promotes climate-smart agricultural practices, and ensures effective delivery of project interventions at the field level.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Technical Implementation & Farmer Support

  • Provide on-farm technical guidance on wheat crop production, livestock management, and sustainable farming practices
  • Demonstrate improved agricultural techniques (soil management, water conservation, integrated pest management)
  • Train farmers on animal husbandry, feed formulation, and livestock health management
  • Promote adoption of climate-resilient crops and drought-tolerant varieties

2. Inputs & Resource Management

  • Oversee distribution and proper use of agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilizers, tools)
  • Supervise distribution of livestock inputs (vaccines, feed supplements, breeding stock)
  • Monitor input utilization and impact on farm productivity
  • Support establishment of community seed banks and fodder banks

3. Capacity Building & Extension Services

  • Conduct farmer field schools and training sessions
  • Develop simple training materials in local languages
  • Strengthen farmer groups and cooperatives for collective marketing
  • Link farmers to agricultural extension services and veterinary care

4. Monitoring & Reporting

  • Collect field data on crop performance, livestock productivity, and adoption rates
  • Document success stories, challenges, and lessons learned
  • Prepare weekly and monthly activity reports
  • Participate in project reviews and planning meetings

5. Coordination & Partnerships

  • Liaise with local agriculture offices, research institutions, and NGOs
  • Coordinate with veterinary services for livestock health programs
  • Represent the project in agricultural forums and working groups

Job Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Agronomy, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years experience in agricultural extension or rural development projects
  • Practical experience with both crop and livestock production systems
  • Familiarity with climate-smart agriculture approaches

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of crop husbandry and livestock management
  • Understanding of soil health, water management, and pest control
  • Experience with farmer training methodologies
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office, data collection apps)

Essential Attributes:

  • Excellent communication and training skills
  • Ability to work effectively with rural communities
  • Fluency in local languages (specify if required)
  • Willingness to travel extensively to remote areas

Work Environment:

  • 80% field-based work in rural farming communities
  • 20% office-based for planning and reporting
  • Exposure to all weather conditions and agricultural environments
