Job Description:
Job Summary:
The Agriculture Assistant provides hands-on support in implementing field-level agricultural and livestock activities to improve productivity and livelihoods of smallholder farmers. This role assists in farmer training, field demonstrations, data collection, and monitoring of project interventions at the community level.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Field Implementation Support
- Assist in organizing and conducting farmer training sessions on improved agricultural practices
- Support establishment and monitoring of demonstration plots for new crop varieties/techniques
- Help implement livestock improvement activities (vaccination campaigns, feed demonstrations)
- Distribute and monitor use of agricultural inputs (seeds, tools, fertilizers)
2. Farmer Engagement & Capacity Building
- Mobilize farmers and pastoralists to participate in project activities
- Conduct regular farm visits to provide on-site technical advice
- Assist in forming and strengthening farmer groups and cooperatives
- Translate technical concepts into local languages for better understanding
3. Data Collection & Reporting
- Collect field data on crop performance, livestock health, and adoption rates
- Maintain accurate records of beneficiary participation and input distribution
- Prepare weekly field reports with photographs
- Document success stories and challenges from the field
4. Community Liaison
- Serve as primary contact between project and local communities
- Relay farmer feedback and concerns to supervisors
- Support conflict resolution among beneficiary groups
Job Requirements:
Education & Experience:
- Diploma in Agriculture, Animal Science, or related field
- Minimum 3-year experience in agricultural extension or rural development
- Field experience with both crops and livestock systems
- Familiarity with climate-smart agriculture approaches
Technical Competencies:
- Understanding of good agricultural practices
- Ability to conduct simple field measurements and observations
- Basic computer skills (Word, Excel for simple reporting)
Essential Attributes:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Fluency in local language(s)
- Physical ability to work in rural farm conditions
- Strong teamwork and learning attitude
Work Environment:
- 90% field-based work in rural communities
- 10% office time for reporting and planning
- Exposure to all weather conditions and farm environments
- Regular interaction with smallholder farmers and pastoralists.
