Job Description:

Position Summary

PRB is currently implementing a livestock-focused project in Balkh, Jawzjan and Samangan provinces, aimed at improving animal health services, feed accessibility, stable infrastructure, trainings, and market linkages for livestock products.

PRB is seeking experienced and committed Livestock Trainers to implement field-based training and technical support to rural livestock holders. The role is essential in building the capacity of community members, particularly women and vulnerable households, on animal health, nutrition, product preservation, and livestock-based income generation. The Livestock Trainer will work closely with Paravets, Village-based Veterinary Field Units (VFUs), and local structures to ensure sustainable improvements in animal husbandry practices and value chain activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver hands-on training sessions on:
    • Basic animal health care and first aid
    • Common livestock disease identification and management
    • Improved feeding techniques (e.g., urea-treated straw, silage production)
    • Seasonal livestock preparedness, particularly for winter
    • Preservation and value addition of dairy, wool, and leather products
  • Conduct regular household-level follow-ups to reinforce practical application of training.
  • Collaborate with VFUs and paravets to plan and execute outreach, deworming, and vaccination campaigns.
  • Ensure effective utilization of distributed inputs (feeds, seeds, veterinary tools).
  • Promote inclusion by actively engaging women and marginalized groups in all training activities.
  • Facilitate specialized training for women on product processing, storage, and marketing techniques.
  • Provide technical guidance on stable rehabilitation and maintenance of livestock facilities.
  • Identify and report technical gaps and suggest improvements to the Project Officer.
  • Promote animal welfare, hygiene, and safety practices during all interactions.

Job Requirements:

Candidates will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of field experience in livestock training, veterinary care, or rural extension services.
  • Experience working with community-based animal health networks (e.g., paravets, VFUs).

Skills and Competencies:

  • Solid knowledge of local livestock production systems, disease control, and feed/pasture improvement.
  • Proven ability to train and facilitate learning, especially among rural women and farmers with low literacy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to inclusive community engagement.
  • Good reporting and documentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel to remote project locations within the designated provinces
  • Fluency in Dari and/or Pashto; working English is desirable.

Preference will be given to candidates residing in the provinces where the project is being implemented.
