Job Description:
MISSION
Goal/Purpose:
The WASH Coordinator Assistant for Gender Inclusion will support the integration of gender inclusion strategies across WASH programs, ensuring the specific needs of women beneficiaries are addressed in all aspects of the program. The position focuses on enhancing women's participation in traditionally male-dominated technical areas, not limited to hygiene promotion, and ensuring gender-sensitive program design, implementation, and evaluation.
In addition, the Assistant will contribute to broader gender inclusion efforts within the WASH sector through strong coordination with clusters and other relevant actors. This role will also incorporate considerations related to safeguarding and gender-based violence (GBV) in the context of WASH programs, ensuring that no harm is caused and that the principles of dignity, safety, and inclusion are upheld.
Key Objectives:
- Ensure that women beneficiaries are effectively reached and empowered throughout the WASH program.
- Support the integration of protection principles and gender-sensitive programming within all WASH projects, including but not limited to hygiene promotion.
- Provide technical guidance on incorporating gender equality and inclusion into WASH interventions.
- Advocate internally to ensure that gender equality and protection principles are embedded across all program activities.
- Foster strong engagement with women in the field, particularly those who may not speak English, to ensure their voices and inputs are considered and integrated into WASH program activities.
JOB
List of main activities:
1. Women Inclusion in WASH Programs:
- Develop a deep understanding of women's needs and challenges in WASH, utilizing culturally appropriate assessment methods.
- Promote the integration of gender inclusion strategies into WASH proposals, ensuring all activities are designed to include a response on the specific needs of women.
- Collaborate with WASH program managers and technical teams to embed gender-sensitive approaches in program design, implementation, and monitoring.
- Advocate for the active inclusion of women in decision-making processes related to WASH activities, ensuring their needs and perspectives are incorporated.
- Ensure equal benefits for both men and women in WASH interventions, including in areas such as water access, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education.
- Contribute to develop strategies to adapt WASH programming in water-scarce areas, where women are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis.
2. Gender Awareness and Capacity Building:
- Assist in conducting gender and inclusion assessments to identify barriers that limit women's participation and access to WASH services.
- Support the development and delivery of training sessions on gender sensitivity and inclusion for WASH staff, partners, and community stakeholders.
- Promote awareness of gender equality and women’s empowerment within the WASH team and among partners.
- Contribute to the creation of tools, guidelines, and checklists for gender-responsive WASH programming.
- In case of programming evolution, the job description could evolve to cover FSL oriented activities as well, but the primary focus remains WASH.
3. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:
- Support the integration of gender and inclusion indicators into all program activities and ensure that data collection and reporting processes reflect these priorities.
- Collaborate with the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) team to track gender-related indicators and drive continuous improvement in gender-sensitive programming.
- Contribute to donors reports and propose recommendations with a focus on gender inclusion.
4. External Coordination:
- Coordinate with community-based organizations, local women’s groups, and other stakeholders to ensure the needs of female beneficiaries are well understood and addressed in WASH programming.
- Participate in coordination meetings with gender-focused groups and stakeholders to share best practices and ensure alignment with gender-sensitive interventions.
- Support the HP TWiG lead by SI on the gender aspects (HP / access to women / specific messages / ...) and improve integration of local partners (women-based NGO) in the HP TWiG to improve gender approach/strategy.
5. Safeguarding and protection mainstreaming Considerations:
- While not directly responsible for protection, collaborate with other staff to ensure WASH interventions do not inadvertently exacerbate gender-based violence risks or exclude vulnerable groups.
- Provide input into ensuring that WASH facilities and services are safe, accessible, and respectful for all genders.
