Background

Salam Afghanistan Media Organization (SAMO) is the parent organization to Salam Watandar (SW) Radio Kabul (98.9FM), Salam Watandar Radio Network, SAMO Research, Evaluations and Learning (REL) center, SW News Agency (www.swn.af), Professional Media and Communications Training Hub, and SAMO Professional Technical Workshop on Media and ICTs.    

Established in 2003, SAMO has been one of the nation’s leading media organizations operating in all provinces of Afghanistan through more than 100 partner stations reaching over 22 million people across the country.  The organization has undertaken various multi-media outreach, awareness, and advocacy collaborative partnerships to support the international partners of Afghanistan including UN agencies, international organizations, embassies, private sector and government media needs.   

SAMO’s Mission: 

SAMO is a multi-media platform that reaches out to Afghans, nationwide. The organization has a multi-pronged approach – i.e. radio, TV, print, and social media – to generate debates around issues of importance to the people of Afghanistan and stir debates/engagement around them so as to ensure citizens remain informed and make informed decisions on issues and matters which affect them.

SAMO will be a funding-diversified, sustainable and independent multi-media platform. Its governance and leadership will function according to international standards of good practice. National and international partners will consider SAMO as a model of institutional and organizational excellence.  

Afghans are active citizens, not passive subjects:

• Political and community leaders will listen to and take account of the voice of ordinary people.
• Young people will be better informed, less manipulated by those who seek to exploit them, and increasingly perceive themselves as having the right to express their aspirations.
• Women's rights are promoted to empower and engage them in all spheres of life.
• Farmers will have increased access to information about how to be more successful and profitable.
• Business people will understand their social responsibilities. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. News Reporting (Online):
   • Research, write, and publish accurate, timely, and engaging news articles in English for the organization’s online platforms.
   • Monitor national and international news, press releases, and developments to identify relevant stories.
   • Conduct interviews, gather information, and verify facts before publishing.
   • Collaborate with editorial and multimedia teams to ensure high-quality content delivery.
2. Translation:
   • Translate documents, reports, news items, press releases, and other written content from Dari and Pashto to English with a high degree of accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
   • Ensure the translated content maintains the original meaning, tone, and context.
   • Proofread and edit translated content for grammar, clarity, and consistency.
3. Content Development:
   • Assist in generating original content ideas and reporting angles that are relevant to target audiences.
   • Adapt and localize international stories for Afghan and global audiences.
4. Editorial Coordination:
   • Coordinate with team members, editors, and other departments to align on content planning and deadlines.
   • Follow the organization’s editorial guidelines and ensure journalistic integrity.
5. Social Media Support:
   • Assist in adapting and posting English content to online and social media platforms when needed.
   • Respond to queries and engage with readers/followers in a professional manner.
6. Compliance and Ethics:
   • Uphold media ethics and organizational values at all times.
   • Ensure all published content is free of bias, misinformation, and political partisanship.
7. Other Duties:
   • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and editorial planning sessions.
   • Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor that are relevant to the position’s scope.

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English Literature, Communications, or a related field.
• Minimum 2–3 years of experience in journalism, news reporting, translation, or related fields.
• Demonstrated experience in writing and publishing English news articles, preferably for online platforms.
• Proven experience in translating Dari and Pashto documents to English with accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
• Proven experience in news writing, journalism, or translation.
• Excellent command of English (written and spoken), with fluency in Dari and Pashto.
• Strong understanding of Afghan social, political, and cultural context.
• Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
• Familiarity with digital publishing tools and online content management systems (CMS) is a plus.
