Job Description:

To lead, supervise, and ensure the successful installation, testing, commissioning, and documentation of the Cathodic Protection (CP) system for the underground gas pipeline as per approved design, safety standards, and international codes.To lead, supervise, and ensure the successful installation, testing, commissioning, and documentation of the Cathodic Protection (CP) system for the underground gas pipeline as per approved design, safety standards, and international codes.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Review and Preparation

  • Review approved CP design drawings, grounding details, material specs, and layout plans.
  • Develop method statements, risk assessments, and work procedures for CP system installation.
  • Estimate and plan manpower, tools, equipment, and materials required for CP construction.

 

2. Installation Supervision

Supervise installation of all CP system components including:

  • Anode beds (shallow or deep well type),
  • Grounding systems,
  • Transformer rectifiers (TR),
  • Junction boxes and test posts,
  • Insulating flanges, bonds, and continuity cables.
  • Monitor and verify cable routing, trenching, backfilling, and protective conduit installation.

 

3. Testing and Commissioning

  • Perform continuity tests, coating defect (holiday) detection surveys, and isolation verification.
  • Conduct baseline surveys such as:
  • Close Interval Potential Survey (CIPS),
  • DCVG (Direct Current Voltage Gradient) if applicable.
  • Oversee energization of rectifiers and adjust output to achieve design protection levels.
  • Record and document structure-to-soil potential measurements and adjust CP levels.

 

4. Quality Assurance and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with international standards (e.g., NACE SP0169, ISO 15589, IEEE, API).
  • Supervise compliance with all safety procedures during CP installation (especially for deep well drilling, TR energization, and DC cabling).
  • Coordinate third-party testing or audits (if required).

 

5. Coordination and Reporting

  • Work closely with pipeline, electrical, and instrumentation teams for proper integration.
  • Prepare and submit daily progress reports, inspection forms, as-built drawings, and commissioning reports.

 

6. Documentation and Handover

  • Prepare redline drawings and final as-built documentation.
  • Provide commissioning report including rectifier settings, current output, and system performance data.
  • Assist in preparing operation and maintenance (O&M) manual.
  • Train client’s operational staff on CP system monitoring and maintenance.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Corrosion, or Materials Engineering (preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in CP system installation for oil/gas pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of cathodic protection principles, AC/DC systems, and corrosion mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with test equipment: multimeters, CP meters, reference electrodes, interrupters.
  • Certified by NACE (CP Level 1/2) or equivalent is highly preferred.
  • Proficient in report writing, drawing markup, and field supervision.
  • Fluent in English; knowledge of Dari or Pashto is an advantage.
