Vento di Terra (VDT) is an Italian NGO renowned for its commitment to human rights, social justice, and sustainable development. In Afghanistan, Vento di Terra has focused on building resilient communities through agriculture, livestock, and disaster risk management. Together, RAADA and Vento di Terra have joined forces to implement the Emergency Project for Earthquake-Affected People in Dara-e-Noor District of Nanagarhar Province and Sokia District of Kunar Province, funded by AICS. This collaborative initiative aims to support vulnerable families in Dara-e-Noor District of Nanagarhar Province and Sokia District of Kunar Province by enhancing food security, promoting sustainable agriculture and livestock practices, and strengthening community resilience to natural disasters. Through this project, the two organizations bring complementary expertise to create lasting change for the people of Nanagarhar & Kunar.

Job Description:

1. Summary of Job Purpose:

The Veterinary Officer is responsible for providing professional veterinary services, disease prevention, treatment, and health management of livestock within the project area. This role includes delivering technical support to livestock owners, conducting vaccinations, and ensuring animal welfare to improve productivity and livelihoods of vulnerable communities.

2. Job Description:

The Veterinary Officer conducts field visits to monitor livestock health, identify diseases, and provide timely treatment and preventive care. The officer collaborates closely with project teams, farmers, and local veterinary services to implement animal health programs, training, and awareness campaigns. The role requires expertise in diagnosing livestock diseases, administering vaccines, and promoting best animal husbandry practices.

3. Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular field visits to project sites for monitoring livestock health and identifying disease outbreaks.
  • Provide veterinary treatment including diagnosis, medication, vaccination, and disease control.
  • Develop and implement vaccination campaigns in coordination with local veterinary authorities.
  • Train livestock owners on animal health management, nutrition, disease prevention, and hygiene practices.
  • Advise farmers on improved husbandry techniques to enhance livestock productivity and welfare.
  • Collaborate with local veterinary clinics, government animal health departments, and NGOs for technical support and resources.
  • Maintain accurate records of veterinary interventions, animal health status, and medication distribution.
  • Support beneficiary selection and verification related to livestock interventions.
  • Report any livestock disease outbreaks or emergencies promptly to project management and relevant authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with project guidelines, animal welfare standards, and biosecurity protocols.
  • Participate in community awareness sessions and facilitate knowledge sharing among farmers.
  • Prepare regular reports on veterinary activities, challenges, and outcomes for the project team.

Job Requirements:

  • A university degree in animal health, veterinary science
  • Fluent in local languages (Dari and Pashto)
  • At least 2 years of working experience in a similar position in a national or international NGO
  • Excellent understanding of local context, needs, and challenges of the local communities
  • Effective member of the team and role model; demonstrates creativity in seeking better ways to do things and shares with the team, and promotes high standards
  • Ability to travel extensively across all five districts of Herat Province
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse communities
  • Successfully manages conflicting debates in the community
  • Ability to facilitate workshops and gatherings to reach its required outputs
