About MEDAIR:

Medair is an international humanitarian organization established in 1988. Medair has been operating in Afghanistan since 1996 with programs mainly in the Health, Water & Sanitation, and Livelihoods sectors with significant reconstruction activities in remote areas. Current projects are Water & Sanitation, Food Security, & Disaster Risk Reduction.

An Integrated Emergency Response: Medair aims to respond to high levels of food insecurity, malnutrition, and morbidity in Tirinkot district.  The project intends to improve and extend WASH services including water supply infrastructure and hygiene practices to improve outcomes for vulnerable families.

An Integrated Emergency Response: Medair aims to respond to high levels of food insecurity, malnutrition, and morbidity in Uruzgan, which has been significantly affected by drought and conflict conditions. Building upon Medair’s decades of experience in the Central Highlands and Kandahar, the project intends to improve and extend the utilization of lifesaving preventive and curative nutrition and health services by mothers, PLWs, and children U5; to increase access to clean water, to reduce vulnerability to water-related and other preventable diseases, and to improve and increase food security for the most vulnerable families through food voucher distributions.

Job Description:

RESPONSIBILITIES

General Responsibilities:

  • To maintain a safe and secure environment for employees, visitors, and residents by patrolling and monitoring premises and personnel. The ideal candidate will demonstrate high vigilance, manage access control systems effectively, and oversee the general maintenance and functionality of the base infrastructure (generator, Water Pump, Power Station).
  • To be flexible, willing to assist in other areas of work.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Enforce strict access control procedures; ensure no unauthorized personnel enter the compound without prior approval and valid identification.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of all incoming vehicles and personnel to prevent the entry of weapons, explosives, contraband, or other security threats. 
  • Maintain a comprehensive log of all guests and visitors. Issue visitor badges and professionally escort guests to their specific destinations or departments within the compound.
  • Manage the opening and closing of the main gates for authorized vehicle movement, ensuring the gate remains securely locked at all other times.
  • Actively monitor Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) feeds to identify and assess potential security risks in realtime.
  • Conduct regular and random foot patrols of the compound—including the perimeter fence, office grounds, and warehouse areas—to deter criminal activity.
  • Maintain a state of high alertness throughout the duration of the shift, including night shifts, to ensure continuous protection of the site.
  • Immediately detect and report any suspicious behaviours, security breaches, or unusual occurrences to the expatriate staff, radio operator, or security manager.
  • Perform routine checks to ensure the operational status of critical infrastructure, including water pumps and power generators; operate these systems as required by power schedules.
  • Monitor fuel levels for heating systems (kerosene/diesel/wood) and generators; proactively alert management when stocks reach reorder levels to prevent shortages.
  • Maintain the aesthetic appearance and hygiene of the compound, including general cleaning of office grounds and routine gardening duties (watering and maintenance).
  • Ensure the gatehouse and immediate surrounding areas are kept clean, tidy, and free of safety hazards.
  • Oversee the loading and unloading of supplies to the warehouse to ensure preventing theft or pilferage.
  • Receive, record, and securely deliver incoming letters, packages, and official correspondence to the appropriate office personnel.
  • Act as the first point of contact during emergencies (fire, medical, or intrusion), initiating alarm systems and guiding occupants to assembly points, ensuring that fire exits remain unblocked and fire extinguishers are accessible.
  • Utilize professional communication skills to de-escalate tense situations with visitors or intruders while maintaining a firm security posture, and detailed shift report (Daily Activity Report) summarizing all movements, incidents, and maintenance issues observed during the watch.

*The working hours will be arranged in a rotating schedule.

Job Requirements:

Education: Basic reading and writing is required. High School certificate is desirable.

Experience: Minimum 1 year working experience as a security guard/chawkidar. Previous experience with an INGO & NGO is desirable.

Language: Good Pashto written and spoken skills. Basic knowledge of Spoken English.

Integrity/honesty: Works with integrity and honesty Able to maintain confidentiality .

Organisational capacity: Able to work without supervision. Able to prioritise and time manage. Ability to take instruction. Committed to the MEDAIR Policies.

Team: Able to work as part of a team.

Other:

  • Flexible and willing to perform other tasks to facilitate the runing of office/houses.
  • Good physical condition [fit to do some physical task, eyesight and hearing condition, and ability to stand or patrol for extended periods.
  • Basic Technical Knowledge of operating the Generator and water pump.
