Job Description:
Role Summary:
Under the supervision of Sr. project coordinator/Team Leader of UNDP-ABADI, the Agriculture Coordinator is responsible for the project Agronomical/Horticulture technical support to AAA’s work on ABADI, ensuring effective implementation of ABADI activities and achieve its results which aim to provide alternative sources of incomes and livelihoods to the communities that have been severely affected by the recent ban on poppy cultivation and contributes to the overall vision of achieving AAA country strategy.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Coordinate with the various project teams and partners to ensure a timely and effective project roll out as per the project design.
- Coordinate and oversee the implementation of smallholder agriculture market support (SAMS), small scale value chains, food systems initiatives, nutrition, pre- and post-harvest management and climate change, disaster risk management, forecast based finance initiatives within the Afghanistan program area.
- Supports with the formulation of ABADI Good Horticultural practices and resilience initiatives through identification, validation and scaling up of best practices
- Integrate with asset creation and livelihoods AAA Climate Resilient Sustainable Agriculture (CRSA) approach technologies in agriculture.
- Contributes to the development of a wide variety of food systems, CRSA, anticipatory actions, disaster risk reduction, and climate resilient livelihoods projects, plans and processes, ensuring alignment with wider resilience building programme policies and guidance.
- Provide specialized project management support to specific and/or defined programs to ensure that technical support is provided or resourced following AAA’s policies and procedures.
- Mobilize and coordinate private sector input partners and other Agri services providers to participate and invest in developing practical solutions for SHFs to produce sustainably and increase productivity and use of climate smart technologies relevant to SHFs.
- Coordinate with agriculture ecosystem players in developing a scalable and sustainable model to offer last mile delivery of extension information, inputs, climate services, market linkage, post-harvest management and other services to SHFs.
- Participate in support and supervision missions to project sites to monitor progress and assist project coordinators in resolving challenges. This includes identifying training and capacity building areas for the team and cooperating partners.
- Provide effective technical support to field project teams on roll out of the various components of the project through close consultation with the Technical Program teams and the national level and cluster/grant project coordinator.
- Develop program planning on agricultural/horticultural interventions considering the seasonality of the areas and prepare MRFs for agro inputs support in consultation with field team and procurement.
- Ensure that business processes, standards and guidelines related to Livelihood & resilience initiatives are effectively applied by field programs.
- Assess and facilitate capacity building of project staff on technical modules, through training, workshops, Job training, technical backstopping for enhanced capacity in the delivery of Farmer Field Schools Value addition and marketing initiatives
- Enhancing farmers and staff capacity on financial literacy, Agribusiness, entrepreneurship, Business incubation, Business Development Services, product pricing, aggregation, collective marketing, and negotiation skills as well as on-farm and off-farm local value chain development
- Liaises with other UN agencies, Food Security and Agriculture Cluster and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to identify opportunities for joint programs and initiatives.
Job Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills and Qualification:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in agricultural sciences, agronomy, horticulture, development studies, rural development, or any other related discipline from an accredited institution.
Professional experience:
- Minimum 7 years of relevant experience with implementation of a complex agricultural/horticultural value-chain program/projects in similar settings.
- Experience in program design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and reporting.
- Demonstrate ability to influence, network and collaborate with national Clusters forums, NGO and UN Agency on food security and economic development
- Proven track record as a staff and community trainer and capacity builder in mindset change, agricultural production, on-farm and off-farm Local value chain development, marketing and financial inclusion
- Ability to take initiative, solve complex problems, exercise independent judgment.
- Familiarity with systems approaches to Safeguarding programming, advocacy approaches and referral systems.
- Demonstrate ability to manage resources efficiently and effectively.
Language:
- Fluency in English, Dari/Persian and Pashto is required.
