About MEDAIR:

Medair is an international humanitarian organization established in 1988. Medair has been operating in Afghanistan since 1996 with programs mainly in the Health, Water & Sanitation, and Livelihoods sectors with significant reconstruction activities in remote areas. Current projects are Water & Sanitation, Food Security, & Disaster Risk Reduction.

An Integrated Emergency Response: Medair aims to respond to high levels of food insecurity, malnutrition, and morbidity in Tirinkot district.  The project intends to improve and extend WASH services including water supply infrastructure and hygiene practices to improve outcomes for vulnerable families.

An Integrated Emergency Response: Medair aims to respond to high levels of food insecurity, malnutrition, and morbidity in Uruzgan, which has been significantly affected by drought and conflict conditions. Building upon Medair’s decades of experience in the Central Highlands and Kandahar, the project intends to improve and extend the utilization of lifesaving preventive and curative nutrition and health services by mothers, PLWs, and children U5; to increase access to clean water, to reduce vulnerability to water-related and other preventable diseases, and to improve and increase food security for the most vulnerable families through food voucher distributions.

Job Description:

Overall purpose

The Pharmacy Assistant is an essential member of the Basic Health Centre (BHC) providing integrated primary health and nutrition services to targeted communities. The Pharmacy Assistant (PA) will be responsible to manage safe storage of health and nutrition consumables, assist in the preparation and safe dispensing of medicine according to prescriptions and NSTG, provide education on how to take medicines as prescribed, and ensure accurate documentation and reporting of stock consumption is completed from each working day. The PA will work closely with the Snr. Pharmacy Assistant and Facility Supervisor to ensure medicines and supplies are requested in a timely manner and stored securely in the clinic. The PA will ensure standard procedures relating to medicines, medical supplies and nutrition commodities are followed by the BHC level.   

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical:

  • Manage health and nutrition stock required by BHC in line with Medair guidelines and best practice.
  • Set up pharmacy and nutrition dispensing station at BHC site.
  • Prepare Stock Requests in coordination with Facility supervisor to ensure no stock outs of essential medicines at clinic sites.
  • Dispense medicines, medical supplies and nutrition commodities to beneficiaries as per prescriptions provided by clinical staff.
  • Ensure required PPE is available and in use appropriately at clinic sites.
  • Provide education to beneficiaries receiving nutrition supplies or medicines to ensure they know how to take in accordance with prescription. The PA will be familiar with nutrition job aids for routine nutrition rations and medication.  
  • Maintain required documentation, including pharmacy dispensing register and nutrition commodities records, tally sheets and upload daily for visibility on pharmacy dashboard.
  • Report any problem with the quality of supplies available to line manager. Complete a loss report for any damaged items.  
  • Support to Facility Supervisor as needed to implement Medair medicine stock management policies, including physical stock checks.

General: 

  • Implement, relevant policies and standards relating to health and nutrition service delivery including, national requirements and donor guidelines.  
  • Participate as requested in Medair internal workshops and distance learning sessions to keep up with new guidelines and best practices.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

  • Dispense medicines and nutrition supplies to beneficiaries, according to prescriptions and standard rations.
  • Provide beneficiaries with medicine information in accordance with prescription
  • Support the Project team to prepare a list of medicines with the standard/required specification.
  • Demonstrate that all beneficiaries have received the medicines prescribed.
  • Record all pharmaceuticals dispensed in pharmacy registers for each patient and tally all medicine provided •   Enter daily pharmacy data into ODK.
  • Maintain the record of BHC pharmacy and nutrition stock.   
  • Based on project need determine BHC needs in terms of storage, medicines, and project commodities and in coordination with team prepare stock requests.  
  • On request, advise project staff regarding pharmacy management and alert team leader to any concerns/issues.  
  • Provide the required information to the project team. 
  • Keep awareness and alert system on drugs batch recalls and failures.
  • Perform any other duties to support BHC and project implementation assigned by the line manager.

Job Requirements:

Education: Diploma in Pharmacy or other relevant field is required, bachelor's and master's degree preferred.   

Relevant experience:

  • At least 2 years experience in the relevant fields (BHC, pharmacy and stock management) with national or international NGO is required.
  • Experience working in a BHC and/or nutrition team is desirable. 
  • Knowledge of intervention area is desirable.
  • High flexibility in deployment is desirable. 

Languages: Good Pashto - oral and written skills and good English - oral and written skills is required.

Computer: Working knowledge in MS word and excel.
