Job Description:

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive anesthesia services for elective and emergency procedures across Surgery, OB-GYN, and pediatric/neonatal cases.
  • Conduct thorough preoperative assessments, obtain informed consent, and ensure high-quality perioperative and post-anesthesia care.
  • Manage airway, pain control, resuscitation, and critical-care anesthesia when required.
  • Ensure appropriate anesthesia method selection (general, regional, spinal, and sedation) based on patient and surgical needs.
  • Participate actively in emergency response, including trauma, obstetric emergencies, and neonatal resuscitations.

2. Supervisory & Team Management Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise all anesthesia staff, including anesthetists, anesthesia technicians, and recovery room personnel.
  • Develop and manage staff duty schedules, on-call rotations, and shift assignments to ensure uninterrupted coverage.
  • Conduct regular skill assessments and performance evaluations, and identify training needs for team members.
  • Provide clinical mentorship, coaching, and competency-building sessions for junior anesthetists and OT staff.
  • Maintain a positive and professional team culture, promoting accountability, communication, and teamwork.
  • Address staff conflicts, performance issues, and disciplinary matters in collaboration with HR and the Medical Director.

3. Interdepartmental Collaboration & Teamwork

  • Work closely with surgeons, OT nurses, midwives, neonatologists, and urgent care teams to ensure smooth coordination of all procedures.
  • Participate in daily OT planning meetings, case discussions, and scheduling coordination.
  • Collaborate with the sterilization (CSSD) team to ensure all anesthesia and airway equipment is properly sterilized, available, and safe for use.
  • Maintain strong communication with the OT in charge, ensuring readiness of OT rooms, equipment, medication, and emergency supplies.
  • Promote a respectful, cooperative, and solution-focused environment within the operating theater.

4. Administrative & Quality Management

  • Ensure functionality and maintenance of anesthesia machines, monitors, ventilators, suction units, and emergency carts.
  • Oversee controlled drugs, anesthesia medications, airway equipment, and consumables, ensuring proper stock levels and safe usage.
  • Develop, update, and enforce anesthesia policies, protocols, and SOPs based on hospital and MoPH standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of anesthesia charts, incident reports, near misses, and departmental logs.
  • Participate in hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives, audits, and morbidity & mortality review meetings.

5. Patient Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and hospital infection-prevention protocols.
  • Implement and monitor adherence to clinical standards for patient assessment, monitoring, recovery, and pain management.
  • Ensure all team members follow ethical, safe, and evidence-based anesthesia practices.

Job Requirements:

  • MD/MBBS with specialization in Anesthesiology.
  • Valid license/registration with Afghan medical authorities.
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical anesthesia experience, including supervisory experience.
  • Strong leadership, team management, and communication skills.
  • Proven experience working in theater units with active surgery and obstetric services.
