Job Description:
JOB PURPOSE
The Planning Engineer is responsible for planning, scheduling, monitoring, and controlling road construction projects using Primavera P6, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within approved budgets. The role focuses on baseline schedule development, progress tracking, delay analysis, and reporting, enabling informed management decisions and contractual compliance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Project Planning & Scheduling
- Develop detailed project schedules (Level 3–4) for road construction works including earthworks, subgrade, sub-base, base course, asphalt works, structures, and ancillary works.
- Prepare baseline schedules, work breakdown structures (WBS), and activity logic in accordance with contract requirements.
- Integrate engineering, procurement, and construction activities into a fully logic-linked programme.
- Establish resource-loaded schedules (manpower, equipment) where required.
2. Primavera P6 Responsibilities (Core)
- Develop and maintain project schedules using Primavera P6 Professional.
- Create and manage WBS, calendars, activity codes, relationships, constraints, and milestones.
- Perform critical path analysis (CPM) and identify schedule risks and bottlenecks.
- Update schedules on a weekly/monthly basis based on actual site progress.
- Generate look-ahead schedules (2-week / 4-week / monthly) from the P6 programme.
- Perform schedule variance analysis, float analysis, and progress measurement.
- Maintain baseline, revised baseline, and recovery schedules in P6.
3. Progress Monitoring & Reporting
- Collect progress data from site teams and verify against physical progress.
- Prepare progress reports, S-curves, histograms, and dashboards for management and clients.
- Compare planned vs actual progress and highlight delays, deviations, and recovery actions.
- Support preparation of Executive Summary Reports for senior management.
4. Delay Analysis & Clais Support
- Identify potential delays and assess impact on the project schedule.
- Conduct Time Impact Analysis (TIA) using Primavera P6.
- Support the Project Manager in preparing Extension of Time (EOT) submissions.
- Maintain records for claims, variations, and dispute resolution.
5. Coordination & Interface Management
- Coordinate with Engineering, Procurement, Construction, QA/QC, and HSE teams to ensure alignment with the approved schedule.
- Attend project progress meetings and present schedule status.
- Ensure subcontractors’ schedules are reviewed, integrated, and monitored within the master programme.
6. Cost & Resource Planning (Support Role)
- Support cost engineers by linking schedule activities with cost items (where applicable).
- Monitor resource utilization and productivity trends.
- Support preparation of cash flow forecasts based on the approved programme.
7. Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure schedules comply with contractual requirements, donor standards, and internal SOPs.
- Maintain planning documentation, assumptions logs, and schedule narratives.
- Support audits, technical reviews, and client inspections related to project controls.
Job Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (required).
Experience
- Minimum 5–8 years of experience in planning and scheduling of road/highway construction projects.
- Proven hands-on experience with Primavera P6 Professional.
- Experience working on donor-funded or large infrastructure projects is an advantage.
- TECHNICAL SKILLS

- MS Project (desirable)
