Job Description:

Nutrition nurses are stationed at nutrition service delivery points (SDPs) within villages. They are responsible for the overall management of the SDP and provide treatment for children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM), and malnutrition among Women of Reproductive Age (WoRA). Their work is carried out through national nutrition programs such as the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) and standardized tools like MUAC. Nutrition nurses deliver community-level nutrition services and play a vital role in improving the nutritional status of children under five, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the nutrition service delivery point (SDP) and ensure effective implementation of nutrition services. 
  • Measure and record the weight, height/length, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of children under five. 
  • Identify, screen, and register children with MAM and SAM. 
  • Refer children with SAM to designated health facilities and guide those with MAM to Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programs (TSFP) in line with national guidelines. 
  • Provide treatment and follow-up for children with SAM, children with MAM, and malnutrition cases among WoRA. 
  • Conduct weekly follow-ups for children enrolled in IMAM and distribute Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to eligible beneficiaries according to IMAM procedures. 
  • Promote exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life and appropriate complementary feeding for children aged 6–23 months. 
  • Provide awareness and counseling to mothers and caregivers on breastfeeding, child nutrition, and proper feeding practices. 
  • Prepare and use educational materials such as posters, charts, and visual aids to teach mothers about nutritious foods. 
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare weekly and monthly reports on nutrition activities, beneficiary follow-up, and food distribution. 
  • Coordinate with mobile health teams and relevant organizations to ensure effective delivery of nutrition services. 
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the immediate supervisor or organizational management.

Job Requirements:

  • Diploma or certificate in nursing or community health, with specialized training in nutrition programs, particularly IMAM. 
  • Practical experience in screening, managing, and treating malnutrition using standardized tools (MUAC, weight, height). 
  • Ability to identify, manage, and refer MAM and SAM cases in accordance with national health protocols. 
  • Strong knowledge of Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices, including exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding. 
  • Excellent communication and counseling skills, especially in educating mothers and caregivers. 
  • Ability to prepare accurate reports, track food distribution, and maintain proper documentation for monitoring and evaluation.
