Job Description:
Role Overview
A Pharmacy Assistant supports the pharmacy operations under BPHS (Basic Package of Health Services) and EPHS (Essential Package of Hospital Services) standards. The role focuses on the accurate, safe, and efficient management of medicines and medical supplies at health facilities (clinics, health centers, hospitals) and contributes to quality pharmaceutical services in line with Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) guidelines and donor/NGO requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Medication & Inventory Management
- Receive, check, store, and manage medicines and healthcare supplies according to BPHS/EPHS clinical lists and MoPH procedures.
- Maintain accurate stock levels, monitor expiration dates, perform stock counts, and update inventory records (stock cards/bin cards).
- Issue medicines and materials to health facility departments or community health posts as scheduled.
- Rotate stock to use older items first and minimize waste.
- Prepare requisitions and support orders to avoid shortages.
Dispensing & Patient Interaction
- Assist with dispensing medicines according to prescriptions approved by clinicians.
- Provide basic medicine use information and ensure proper labeling and packaging.
- Answer simple patient queries and refer clinical questions to pharmacists or supervisors.
Record Keeping & Reporting
- Maintain accurate pharmacy documentation (stock movements, dispensing logs, requisitions).
- Collect and compile consumption reports from facilities to inform supply planning.
- Enter data into the pharmacy management system or spreadsheets (e.g., MS Excel).
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure pharmacy workspace is clean, secure, and organized.
- Follow infection prevention and control (IPC) standards in stock handling and dispensing.
- Comply with MoPH, BPHS/EPHS protocols, and NGO operational guidelines.
Coordination
- Work with the Pharmacy Officer/Supervisor and health facility staff to ensure smooth pharmacy operations.
- Assist with training or mentoring of pharmacy support staff where required.
Job Requirements:
Typical Job Requirements
- Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences.
- Experience: Often 2–3 years relevant experience in BPHS/EPHS settings or healthcare supply environments.
- Language: Fluency in Dari and/or Pashto; basic English often preferred.
- Skills:
- Inventory and stock control basics
- Record keeping and documentation
- Communication and teamwork
- Computer literacy (MS Office, pharmacy systems)
Where This Role Fits
- Reports to a Pharmacy Officer or Pharmacy Supervisor in health facilities implementing BPHS/EPHS.
