Job Description:
Provide safe, timely and competent clinical care for inpatients and emergency admissions in surgical wards, ICU, emergency and perioperative settings; support pre-operative assessment and post-operative management of cardiac and surgical patients; participate in on-call duties, basic procedures, documentation, teamwork and hospital quality activities.
Key responsibilities (numbered)
- Clinical assessment & management: Assess inpatients and emergency admissions, take history, perform examination, order/interpret investigations, start treatment and document clear daily care plans under consultant supervision.
- Surgical ward rounds & handover: Conduct structured ward rounds, update problem lists and medication charts, write clear orders and ensure timely handover to the on-call team.
- Emergency care & escalation: Provide immediate assessment and initial stabilization for acute surgical or medical problems; escalate difficult cases promptly to consultants and arrange urgent transfer when needed.
- Perioperative support: Perform pre-op assessment, help optimize co-morbidities, monitor perioperative status and manage routine post-op issues in coordination with ICU, anesthesia and surgical teams.
- Procedures & skills: Perform basic procedures within granted privileges, such as IV access, NG tube insertion, assisting with line placement, wound care, catheterization, LP or intubation where credentialed; keep a procedural logbook.
- On-call duties: Participate in rostered on-call duties for nights/weekends; respond promptly to calls and provide first-line management according to hospital policy.
- Documentation & HMIS: Maintain accurate medical records, medication charts and discharge summaries; complete HMIS entries in a timely manner and ensure documentation is suitable for audit and review.
- Infection control & medication safety: Follow IPC rules, safe medication practices and antibiotic stewardship; report medication errors, breaches or unsafe practice immediately.
- Teaching & supervision: Supervise and teach interns and junior staff at the bedside; take part in departmental teaching, CPD, M&M and audit activities.
- Teamwork, stock & equipment reporting: Report equipment faults and supply shortages promptly, support safe stock handling and work closely with Biomedical, Procurement and nursing teams until issues are resolved.
Job Requirements:
Mandatory
- Medical degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) with valid AMC registration/license.
- Evidence of completion of internship.
- At least some documented exposure to surgical departments, ICU, emergency or operating theatre during training or work.
Preferred
- Postgraduate diploma or training in General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Critical Care or related surgical support fields.
- BLS, ACLS and PALS/APLS certifications.
- Prior experience in tertiary surgical or cardiac hospital settings.
Minimum experience
- 4–5 years clinical experience post-internship, preferably in surgical departments, ICU, OT or emergency care in a hospital setting.
- For roles covering ICU/high-dependency care, at least 3 years of relevant inpatient or critical-care exposure is preferred.
- Experience in general surgery, perioperative care or cardiac surgery will be considered a strong advantage.
Additional requirements
- Willingness to rotate between surgical wards, ICU, emergency and OT support as required.
- Maintain English documentation for HMIS and clinical records; use local language for bedside communication as needed.
- Adhere to hospital IPC, PPE, safety and professional conduct policies.
