Job Description:

General Responsibility:

The Nutrition Officer will be Provide reliable, accurate and timely information and reports for planning and decision making purposes and responsible for the effective coordination of Public Nutrition Services to the OPHA provincial team for implementation of BPHS/EPHS to Assess quality of reported data on Nutrition services and provide feedback in monthly, quarterly and annually as well as will support to the planning, implementation, coordination and monitoring of Nutrition programs and attending coordination meetings when required.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Preparing weekly, monthly and quarterly action plans and progressive reports according to the BPHS/EPHS work plans and ensure the timely implementation
  • Overall management of SAM, MAM, IYCF, Iron and micronutrient distribution, TSFP and IMAM in the HFs Ensure the staff level of knowledge and identify their needs for training
  • Follow up of breast feeding and breast-feeding substitutes in HFs Follow up of Growth/Monitoring of all children and screening of mother’s nutritional status coming to Health Facilities and Health Posts
  • Follow up of Hygiene (latrines or toilets) and safe drinking water in all Health Facilities
  • Conduct training in field of Nutrition and Health for Health facilities staff and if required for CHWs Inspire the medical staff in daily malnutrition screening and proper nutritional consultation in health facilities
  • Maintain effective coordination and communication with PPHD and other developing partners (attending taskforce and coordination meetings)
  • Ensure timely and appropriately reporting by Health facilities and transfer of updated policies and guidelines related to Nutrition to all Health Facility staff and Health Posts
  • Ensure enough equipment required for quality Nutritional service provision in Health Facilities and Health Posts
  • Ensure every child under five is going for growth monitoring and have the Growth monitoring chart
  • Ensure every PLW is receiving IYCF consultation in HFs and HPs coordination with reproductive health officer and CBHC Officer.
  •  Accountable to include possible technical inputs to other BPHS/EPHS components during field supervision and official assignments that are directly or indirectly related to the health care of population with nutrition status and overall project performance
  • To provide on the job training to the health facility staff and CHWs on public nutrition services required by BPHS/EPHS
  • Conduct refresher and initial training to build the capacity of staff of health facilities, CHWs and CHSs and vaccinators
  • Following up of monitoring of action plans of external monitors including the PPHD, MoPH and other partners
  • Facilitate recruitment of the nutrition staff in health facilities in collaboration with other officers
  • Identify, solve or refer the problems of nutrition with PND and related Partners and departments as required
  • Improve the links of referral system in the different level of the health facilities (HP, SC, BHC, CHC and Hospital)
  • Supervise the public nutrition services jointly with PPHD and other partners in the health facilities with constructive feedback and follow up action plan
  • Perform any other tasks as assigned by line supervisor

Job Requirements:

  • Graduated from recognized university as a Medical Doctor, preference will be given to the candidates
    with Master of Public Health (MPH) or post graduated degree in Nutrition.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in managing work experience in nutrition or in public health management with well reputed non-government organization, UN Agencies or other development organizations
  • The position requires regular field visits and providing support to project activities & health facilities.
  • Strong understanding of Afghanistan public nutrition policies and global best practices.
  • Experience with community-based nutrition approaches and health system strengthening.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills in English; fluency in Dari and/or Pashto.
  • Proven skills in using online and offline databases
  • Ability to work on Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Ability to create a supportive working relationship with all project teams
  • Ability to work under pressure, flexible and able to multi-task
