Shelter for Life (SFL), in partnership with FAO, is implementing, the Emergency Food Security Project (OSRO/AFG/150/WBK) and the Afghanistan Emergency Food Security Project (GCP/AFG/146/UK) aim to strengthen food security and resilience among vulnerable households in Parwan Province. These projects respond to acute food insecurity caused by prolonged drought, economic instability, and limited agricultural productivity. By providing immediate food assistance, agricultural inputs, and capacity-building support, the projects seek to enhance livelihoods, improve nutrition, and reduce the vulnerability of smallholder farmers and at-risk communities, thereby contributing to overall stability and resilience in the province
Job Description:
The Agriculture Extension Worker provides training and extension services on wheat production, home gardening, and climate-smart agriculture. The position supports beneficiary profiling survey, agricultural input distribution, Farmer Field Schools (FFS), and Common Interest Groups (CIGs). He/She will conducts field monitoring, technical training, and demonstration activities to improve farmers' knowledge, productivity, and adoption of recommended agricultural practices. Shelter for Life implements safe and PSEA-sensitive human resources practices
and processes throughout recruitment, contracting, and performance management to ensure the safety and well-being of all staff and beneficiaries. Shelter for Life has zero-tolerance policy on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA).
Job Requirements:
Key Responsibility:
- Organize and deliver village-level training sessions (30–35 participants) on Wheat cultivation, vegetable cultivation, home gardening, and climate-smart Agriculture.
- Conduct tailored and separate training sessions for women beneficiaries in line with cultural norms.
- Conduct Beneficiary Profile Surveys (BPS) and collect required beneficiary data.
- Support the distribution of wheat seeds, fertilizers, and other agricultural inputs.
- Train farmers on land preparation, sowing, and improved wheat production practices.
- Provide regular extension services and technical advice throughout the wheat-growing season.
- Conduct field visits to monitor crop growth and farmer adoption of recommended practices.
- Guide farmers on irrigation, fertilizer application, and weed management.
- Support farmers in identifying and managing crop pests and diseases.
- Establish and monitor wheat demonstration plots.
- Organize and facilitate Farmer Field School (FFS) sessions on wheat production.
- Support the formation and strengthening of Common Interest Groups (CIGs).
- Conduct training sessions for male and female beneficiaries on improved wheat cultivation, proper use of fertilizers, and climate-smart practices.
- Provide practical guidance on the use of distributed inputs including wheat seed, animal kits, fertilizers, compost, and bio-fertilizer.
- Guide beneficiaries in proper use of the voucher-based distribution system for wheat seed and other inputs.
- Coordinate closely with Community Mobilizers and Agronomists to ensure smooth implementation and beneficiary engagement.
- Encourage women’s active participation in trainings and field activities while respecting cultural sensitivities.
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the Project Manager in line with project objectives.
Qualification/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture.
- 1 to 2 years relevant work experience in the field of Agriculture Extension worker with NGOs, INGOs or UN agencies.
- Computer skills at the operator level, especially with MS Office packages.
- Good in English and Fluency Dari and/or Pashto, both written and spoken.
- Ability or experience in the field of community driven development projects monitoring
- High attention to detail, effective time management skills, strong work ethic, a willingness to learn new skills, and the ability to be a self-starter.
- Having strong report writing skills.
- Experience in planning, reporting and budgeting.
- Good communication skill and able to pass the massage/questions in local languages to the respondents.
- Have good interpersonal skills and ability to plan work.
- Supervisory, team worker, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
- Regional and cultural knowledge of areas of SFL field operations in Afghanistan
- Willingness to work long hours when required
- Ability and willingness to travel to the project sites and outside of duty station within Afghanistan and adjust to the SFL environment as frequently as required
- Honest, proactive, well mannered, and must share values of SFL.
- Willing to stay in field locations
- Ready to work, live and travel in an intricate and strenuous environment
