At the time of proposal submission, thirty percent of Afghans were undernourished, most were highly vulnerable to economic and natural shocks, and the lack of economic opportunity – compounded by drought – was driving emigration and insecurity.
CAFOD, in consortium with Sanayee Development Organization (SDO) and Hand in Hand Afghanistan (HiH), began a 3-year project funded by the German Government (KZE) via Misereor, focused on the economic empowerment of women and men in Balkh and Herat provinces. The period of performance is from 1 September 2019 to 31 August 2022. The period covered to date is to be evaluated.
The project aims, in part, to build on progress made during the previous Misereor/KZE-funded project and continue support to key elements of the saffron value chain to ensure sustainability in the ability of previously targeted farmers, particularly women, to support their livelihoods through saffron production. The project also aims to support ecologically sustainable diversified livelihoods and economic resilience.
