Job Description:

Job Purpose:

The MHPSS Counselor (CRISES Modifier) plays a critical role in delivering psychosocial support and basic mental health services in emergency-affected communities. As part of the rapid response team under the CRISES Modifier framework, the counselor provides psychological first aid (PFA), individual and group counseling sessions, and community-based psychosocial interventions. The role aims to reduce distress, strengthen coping mechanisms, and refer cases requiring specialized care, while ensuring the integration of MHPSS into the overall emergency health response.

Additionally, the MHPSS Counselor will offer individual psychosocial support, case identification, referrals, psychological first aid (PFA), and brief counseling within the community. They will link community members with integrated mental health services available at the nearest Health Sub-center established by IMC.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

• Provide Mental Health Case Management Services.

• Provide individual and group psychosocial support services.

• Help people to cope better and enhance their resilience in their everyday life.

• Help beneficiaries to resume their normal lives and mental well-being.

• Meet community-identified mental health needs through comprehensive

• Mental Health Case Management.

• Provide psychoeducation sessions.

• Support and follow-up of the referred cases.

• Mental health case recoding and documentation.

  • Meet community-identified mental health needs through comprehensive Mental Health Case Management.
  • Provide trainings on referrals to MHPSS services in the supported centers.
  • Provide awareness sessions on services available and facilitate referrals
  • Prepare and deliver trainings for the purposes of capacity-building on psychosocial support, including PFA and case management trainings, where appropriate
  • Liaise with general practitioners, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals to support clients in need of MHPSS through the referral, diagnosis and treatment process.

         Conduct other MHPSS-related activities as requested.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, Counseling, Social Work, and other Social Science or related field is mandatory.

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 years’ experience working in the community with clients, particularly children that are affected by issues including neglect, abuse, violence, exploitation and mental health issues
  • Experience providing community-based PSS/MHPSS services is mandatory.

Desirable: One year of experience working with an INGO.

Competency:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Dari and Pashto, and English is desirable.
  • Honest, hardworking and self-motivated.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within different cultural environments.
  • Ability to give full attention to what social service clients are saying, understand the points being made, ask questions, and not interrupt inappropriately.
  • Awareness of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Able to deliver training and orientation session in the community.
