Role Summary:
Afghanistan faces severe climate vulnerability due to a combination of environmental and socio-political factors. Recurring climate-induced disasters, particularly droughts and floods, have significantly undermined food security and rural livelihoods. Projections point to a future with rising temperatures, declining rainfall, and more frequent extreme weather events. These impacts are compounded by decades of conflict, which have weakened the population's adaptive capacity. The influx of returnees from Pakistan and nowadays from Iran has, and will continue to have further strained natural resources, intensifying conflicts over land and water access and deepening existing social divides.
The Afghanistan rural economy suffers from limited income-generating opportunities due to poor access to markets, credit, and value-chain infrastructure such as storage and processing facilities. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by climate shocks due to systemic barriers and ban to economic participation, leading to greater household vulnerability. A comprehensive and long-term resilience strategy is urgently needed to address the structural causes of vulnerability, strengthen agribusiness systems, and reduce dependence on emergency assistance
Under the supervision of Project Manager the Agro Business Coordinator is responsible for the project agro business technical support to AAA’s work on PREVALE Program ensuring effective implementation of agro business activities and achieve its results which aim to provide alternative sources of incomes and livelihoods to the communities that have been severely affected by the recent disasters and other economic shocks and contributes to the overall vision of achieving AAA country strategy.Thi position will play a key role in advancing market-oriented, inclusive, and climate-resilient agribusiness solutions for at-risk communities
Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Coordinate and facilitate collaboration on market linkage aspects with the project stakeholders, particularly the private sector, to build public-private-community partnerships in support of project activities.
- Identify appropriate farmers, businesses, and traders to participate in trade missions and B2B.
- Coordinating with MEAL and specialist leads to Conduct AP baseline survey in targeted communities and develop APY database.
- Coordinate with MEAL and specialist to conduct agro-economic assessment of area, price, yield of high-value crops in target area.
- Identify, participate, and support existing trade show and agricultural expo opportunities.
- Train the farmers on the use of value addition equipment and tools, and the steps needed to process value added products.
- Work with the other project team to support market linkages, develop sustainable crop input support models and facilitate commercial crop production at rehabilitated irrigation schemes and other project areas.
- Contribute to the development of extension, training and advisory services related to farming as a business, private extension provision and public–private partnerships and financial literacy.
- Working with project beneficiaries (men, women, farmer groups & youth), seek and support opportunities to reduce post-harvest food losses and waste, and value addition of food products at the farm/household level.
- Provide effective technical support to field project teams on roll out of the various components of the project through close consultation with the Technical Program teams and the national level and cluster/grant project coordinator.
- Ensure that business processes, standards and guidelines related to Livelihood & resilience initiatives are effectively applied by field programs.
- Assess and facilitate capacity building of project staff on technical modules, through trainings, workshops, on Job training, technical backstopping for enhanced capacity in the delivery of Farmer Field Schools Value addition and marketing initiatives
- Enhancing farmers and staff capacity on financial literacy, Agribusiness, entrepreneurship, Business incubation, Business Development Services, product pricing, aggregation, collective marketing and negotiation skills as well as on-farm and off-farm local value chain development
Job Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills and Qualification:
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree inAgribusiness , economics, development studies, business administration and any other related discipline from an accredited institution.Professional experience
Minimum of 7 years of professional experience with agribusiness related programs/projects
Language:
- Fluency in Pashto and Dari is required
- Proficiency in oral and written English is required.
Skills:
- Demonstrate ability to influence, network and collaborate with national Clusters forums, NGO and donors on food security and economic development.
- Demonstrated experience with FCDO-funded projects is an advantage.
- Proven track record as a staff and community trainer and capacity builder in mindset change, , on-farm and off-farm Local value chain development, marketing and financial inclusion
- Ability to take initiative, solve complex problems, exercise independent judgment.
- Familiarity with systems approaches to Safeguarding programming, advocacy approaches and referral systems.
- Demonstrate ability to manage resources efficiently and effectively.
