Job Summary:
A GIS engineer is responsible for building and maintaining GIS databases and utilizing the GIS software to analyze the spatial and non-spatial information in the databases, in other words, a GIS specialist refers to one who is professionally responsible for determining variables in a particular or given geographical area by implementing the Geographic Information System techniques and also supporting the engineering team in preparation of all types of GIS points and the area specification
Job Responsibilities :
Tasks
- Develop and perform GIS analysis, modelling and reporting to support decision-making and determine the coverage areas in each project.
- Supporting the engineering team in preparation of all types of GIS maps, GIS points and area specifications.
- Carry out scanning and digitizing the mapping information to update and maintain map layers and compile the textual and graphic products of geographic data (vector, raster, aerial photograph, satellite imagery) as well as other sources of data.
- Executes all other tasks related to the Geographic Information System as required and provides GIS training for staff, where necessary.
- Provide input data to accomplish land cover and land use compilation or, when data are available through national sources, quality assurance/ quality control (QA/QC) analysis.
- Carry out geo-referencing, editing, Digitizing, and preparation of layout showing GPS points on the map with the use of ESRI software (Arc GIS 10.x)
- Convert GPS coordinates to geographic information and shape file in ArcGIS.
- Preparation of Water supply streams using analysis on the DEM map.
- Using the satellite image to find out and examine the area to make sure that project is physically implantable or either to cancel or reject the project implementation in the area.
- Follow and preparation of the database of cash-for-work projects in Herat and Ghor provinces.
- Find DEM (Digital Elevation Model) map and check the area according to DEM.
- Calculation of coverage area for Gabion check Dam and dry-stone check Dams.
- Preparation of my risk maps according to the information obtained from demining and FOA office.
- Analyzing the Water supply area based on DEM Map.
- Preparing a general map for each province that shows the status of the project. (in progress and completed)
- Perform any other duties as required by the line manager.
- Any other task assigned by line manager on time to time.
Job Requirements:
Education & Training:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in GIS and remote sensing, engineering field, or equivalent
Experience:
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience, including applied experience in GIS Mapping & Design of water supply projects.
- Work experience with international / national organizations is required and a world bank project is preferable.
Ability to work well with a range of stakeholders, including project -affected peoples, government officials, international and Donors
Technical Skills :
- Proven skill in technical surveys and other data collection (maps, benchmark levels, etc.) for the design and preparation of drawings of water supply projects.
- Have the skill to ensure all technical inputs and cost estimates related to the construction components are accurate,
- Sound knowledge of finalizing the scope of work with the timeline needed for the implementation.
- Have experience in GIS map design of water supply projects etc.
- Proven skill in coordinating with the implementing partner NGO to get the desired outputs.
- Proven skill in coordinating with the relevant institutions and the communities.
- Having the skill to contribute towards the preparation of various reports on the status of implementation/progress with irrigation works.
- Good knowledge of AutoCAD, MS Office package, Internet, etc.
- A competent team player.
- Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills and apply them in the working environment.
- Must have worked in hardship areas.
- Experience with the word bank project will be an added advantage.
- Proficient in the use of standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office) and other productivity engineering tools.
