Job Description:

The Agricultural/Horticulturist and Livelihood Specialist will be responsible for leading the design, implementation, and technical supervision of agricultural, horticultural, and livelihood activities in Khost and Zabul provinces. The role focuses on promoting sustainable agricultural practices, improving community resilience, and supporting income-generating opportunities through climate-smart and gender-responsive interventions. Working closely with the Project Manager and local partners, the specialist will provide technical guidance, conduct field assessments, and build the capacity of farmers, community groups, and cooperatives. The position requires strong expertise in agriculture and horticulture, hands-on field experience, and the ability to foster collaboration among stakeholders to achieve tangible livelihood outcomes and environmental sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, planning, and implementation of agricultural, horticultural, and livelihood activities in Khost and Zabul provinces in accordance with project objectives and donor guidelines.
  • Conduct field assessments to identify suitable crops, horticultural practices, and livelihood opportunities that align with local agro-ecological conditions and community needs.
  • Provide technical guidance and capacity-building support to farmers, community groups, and beneficiaries on sustainable agricultural production, climate-smart practices, soil conservation, and water resource management.
  • Promote the establishment of home gardens, orchards, nurseries, and other horticulture-based initiatives to improve food security and income generation.
  • Support the development and strengthening of farmer groups, cooperatives, and small-scale agribusiness enterprises through training, mentorship, and market linkage facilitation.
  • Develop and oversee demonstration plots to showcase best practices in improved crop varieties, irrigation management, pest control, and post-harvest handling.
  • Integrate gender-sensitive and inclusive approaches in all livelihood activities to ensure the active participation of women and youth.
  • Coordinate with local authorities, community leaders, and partner organizations to ensure smooth implementation and sustainability of agricultural interventions.
  • Monitor field activities, collect data, and prepare progress reports, success stories, and case studies reflecting project achievements and challenges.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and social safeguards, promoting sustainable land use and climate resilience.
  • Provide regular technical input and recommendations to the Program Director for project planning, adaptive management, and scaling of successful models.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in design, supervision, and successful completion of agriculture interventions in Afghanistan.
  • Prior experience implementing UNDP or other UN-funded projects is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership, coordination, and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication, report writing, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Fluency in Pashto and Dari (spoken and written) and proficiency in English (oral and written).
