Job Description:

Background:
BDN implements nutrition programs to improve adolescent health outcomes, including the School-based Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (S-WIFS) Program. The S-WIFS Project Manager will oversee planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of school-based nutrition activities, ensuring effective coordination with UNICEF, PPHDs, provincial Education directorates, and local health and education authorities.

Purpose of the Position:
The Project Manager will lead the overall planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of the S-WIFS project, ensuring that weekly iron and folic acid supplementation activities in schools are delivered efficiently, on schedule, and in line with UNICEF, MoPH, MoE, and BDN policies and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the implementation of the S-WIFS program across the target provinces.
  • Develop and regularly update school-based project work plans, timelines, and implementation strategies.
  • Coordinate closely with UNICEF provincial extenders, PPHD, provincial nutrition officers, Department of Education, school authorities, and related stakeholders.
  • Supervise and provide technical guidance to provincial teams, including project supervisors and Master Trainers.
  • Support the organization and delivery of Training of Trainers (ToT) and school-level teacher trainings.
  • Ensure Master Trainers and teachers understand S-WIFS technical guidelines and protocols.
  • Ensure program implementation follows MoPH and MoE micronutrient guidelines and MN TWG guidance.
  • Oversee school mapping, selection of S-WIFS focal teachers, and rollout of weekly IFA distribution.
  • Promote nutrition education and community awareness on anemia, balance food, and social norms affecting adolescent nutrition.
  • Compile and analyze school-level S-WIFS data to inform program decisions.
  • Coordinate with UNICEF provincial extenders and provincial authorities to ensure timely supply and proper storage of IFA tablets and school WIFS materials.
  • Ensure schools receive all required tools: IFA tablets, IEC materials, reporting formats, water jugs, cups, and storage boxes.
  • Monitor weekly IFA distribution, school compliance, and adherence to program guidelines.
  • Oversee regular monitoring visits by Master Trainers and review monitoring checklists.
  • Compile and submit accurate monthly and quarterly progress reports to the BDN main office.
  • Track program indicators, challenges, lessons learned, and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure full compliance with BDN Code of Conduct, Child Safeguarding, PSEA/SH, and AAP policies.
  • Ensure all staff and contractors are oriented on safeguarding and reporting mechanisms.
  • Ensure safe, accessible, and confidential feedback and complaint mechanisms are in place for students and schools.
  • Immediately report any safeguarding or SEA/SH concerns to the BDN main office.
  • Address operational challenges promptly in coordination with provincial management teams and school authorities.

Job Requirements:

Education:

  • Medical Doctor, Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Nutrition, or related field.
  • A master’s degree is an advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years managing health, nutrition, or school-based programs.
  • Experience in anaemia prevention, adolescent nutrition, or micronutrient programs is highly desirable.
  • Strong experience in project management, reporting, and team supervision.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and coordination skills.
  • Excellent planning, monitoring, and reporting abilities.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Knowledge of child safeguarding, PSEA/SH, and accountability mechanisms.
  • Ability to travel frequently to project provinces.
  • Proficiency in English and fluency in Dari and/or Pashto.
