Job Description:
Position Overview
The Site Engineer will be responsible for the on-site technical supervision and quality control of water reservation and conservation structures that support tree plantation and environmental restoration activities. The role ensures that construction works are implemented according to approved designs, technical standards, environmental safeguards, and donor requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct feasibility studies and technical assessments for water reservation structures such as: Rainwater harvesting systems, Ponds, reservoirs, and water pans, Contour trenches and bunds
- Assess hydrology, soil conditions, slope, runoff patterns, and erosion risks.
- Ensure site selection aligns with plantation needs and environmental sustainability.
- Develop or review engineering designs and technical specifications for water conservation and reservation structures.
- Prepare Bills of Quantities (BoQs), cost estimates, and construction schedules.
- Ensure designs are climate-resilient, environmentally sound, and appropriate for local conditions.
- Support preparation of tender documents and technical specifications for construction works.
- Participate in technical evaluation of contractor bids and provide recommendations.
- Assist in contract administration and technical clarifications.
- Supervise construction of water reservation and soil-water conservation structures.
- Conduct regular site inspections to ensure compliance with approved designs, quality standards, and safety requirements.
- Verify measurements, certify completed works, and ensure corrective actions where required.
- Coordinate with forestry, environmental, and water resource teams, local authorities, and community stakeholders.
- Prepare technical progress reports, site inspection reports, and as-built documentation.
- Support community engagement during construction and handover.
- Ensure water reservation structures support long-term water availability for plantations.
- Promote use of local materials and environmentally friendly construction methods.
- Train community members and local user groups on basic maintenance and operation of water conservation structures.
- Identify construction and environmental risks such as flooding, sedimentation, structural failure, or weather-related delays.
- Recommend and implement mitigation measures to protect both infrastructure and plantation sites.
- Ensure all construction activities comply with WHLO policies, donor requirements, national engineering standards, and environmental regulations.
- Integrate environmental and social safeguards into all stages of construction.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or related field.
Minimum 4 years of experience in construction supervision of water conservation, watershed management, preferably in NGO or donor-funded projects.
Experience with rainwater harvesting, check dams, or soil and water conservation structures is highly desirable.
Strong MS. Word and MS Excel skills.
