Job Description:

Job Summary:

We are looking for a diligent and empathetic Data Collector to gather accurate and timely information directly from project beneficiaries and other stakeholders in the field. The Data Collector will play a key role in supporting monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) activities by collecting qualitative and quantitative data that informs program effectiveness and impact. This position requires frequent field visits, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to ethical data collection practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct face-to-face interviews with project beneficiaries using digital data collection tools (e.g., KOBO, ODK, Fulcrum, CommCare).
  • Administer structured and semi-structured questionnaires using tablets or smartphones.
  • Input data accurately into digital forms during field visits.
  • Conduct spot checks and cross-verification of collected data to maintain accuracy.
  • Follow data collection protocols, including consent procedures and respondent privacy.
  • Upload completed forms to the central server daily or as scheduled.
  • Identify and report inconsistencies or technical issues in digital tools to supervisors or IT support.
  • Participate in training sessions to stay updated on new digital tools or revised questionnaires.
  • Use GPS functionality on digital tools to capture location data when required.
  • Capture and upload multimedia content (e.g., photos, audio recordings) as part of data collection when necessary and permitted.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of mobile devices or data collection applications in the field.
  • Collaborate with team leaders and M&E staff to validate data and clarify responses.
  • Maintain backup copies of collected data until successful upload is confirmed.
  • Conduct data collection activities in line with project timelines and daily targets.
  • Maintain clear and organized digital records of completed surveys and interviews.
  • Provide feedback on questionnaire design and digital tool functionality based on field experience.
  • Participate in pilot testing of digital forms and provide recommendations for improvements.
  • Conduct follow-up visits or calls to beneficiaries if clarification or additional data is needed.
  • Submit daily progress updates to supervisors, highlighting achievements and challenges.
  • Respect the cultural and social norms of communities while conducting interviews and surveys.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in social sciences, development studies, statistics, public health, or a related field is an advantage.
  • At least 3 years of prior experience in field data collection, preferably in community-based or development projects.
  • Advance knowledge of data collection methodologies and ethical research practices.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with diverse populations, including vulnerable groups.
  • Comfortable working in rural or underserved areas and adapting to challenging field conditions.
  • Proficiency in mobile or digital data collection tools (e.g., Kobo Toolbox, ODK, CommCare).
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Fluency in English language and local languages spoken in the project area is highly preferred.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with NGOs, humanitarian, or development projects.
  • Familiarity with Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) frameworks and indicators.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Good interpersonal and team collaboration skills.
  • Problem-solving mindset and ability to manage field-related issues.
