Position Overview:
We are seeking to hire at least 34 dedicated and trustworthy data collection couples (male and female pairs) to support fieldwork for ongoing and upcoming research, surveys, project evaluations, and monitoring activities. The selected couples will be responsible for conducting household surveys, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions in various provinces across Afghanistan. Applicants must demonstrate strong communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work effectively as a team in challenging field environments. Prior experience in data collection or community-based assessments is preferred. This is a short-term consultancy-based role, with potential for future engagements based on performance and project needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct household interviews using structured and semi-structured questionnaires in line with project tools and guidelines.
- Facilitate key informant interviews (KIIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) with diverse community members while ensuring confidentiality and neutrality.
- Ensure informed consent is properly obtained from all participants before any data collection activity, respecting ethical and cultural considerations.
- Follow strict data protection and confidentiality protocols, never sharing respondent information without authorization.
- Accurately record responses using paper-based forms or digital tools (e.g., Kobo Toolbox, ODK) as instructed.
- Translate and interpret questions clearly in local languages (Dari, Pashto, or other local dialects) ensuring the respondent fully understands the questions.
- Collaborate effectively with the assigned partner (spouse/couple) to cover male and female respondents in culturally appropriate ways.
- Ensure daily syncing or submission of collected data as per the schedule and in line with project requirements.
- Report daily progress to the supervisor or team lead, flagging any issues encountered in the field.
- Maintain neutrality and avoid influencing participants’ responses, regardless of personal beliefs or affiliations.
- Identify and report protection concerns, sensitive issues, or irregularities to the supervisor using secure and confidential channels.
- Attend training sessions and briefings to understand data collection tools, ethical guidelines, and safety protocols.
- Manage field logistics effectively, including transportation, scheduling, and coordination with local stakeholders if required.
- Adhere to all safety and security instructions provided by the organization or supervising agency during field visits.
- Maintain respectful and professional behavior with community members, colleagues, and partners at all times, ensuring the organization’s reputation is upheld.
- Any other relevant activity/data collection, assigned by the line manager.

Required Experience and Education
- Education:
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in any field for male and under-graduate for female.
- Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in data collection and field work.
- Proven experience in paper-based/digital data collection, survey and research.
- Experience with basic MS office programs.
- Key Required Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills: To engage respectfully and effectively with diverse community members.
- Fluency in local languages (Dari and/or Pashto): For accurate translation and culturally appropriate data collection, and primary written English skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy: Essential for recording reliable and high-quality data.
- Basic digital literacy: Ability to use smartphones or tablets for digital data collection tools like Kobo Toolbox, ODK….
- Teamwork and gender-sensitive collaboration: Ability to work effectively as a couple, respecting local norms around gender roles and access.
